Every year India produces hundreds of millions of tonnes of agricultural residue. Most of it is burned in the field or left to rot. Either way, within months the carbon it holds is back in the atmosphere.
We think that is a waste of something valuable.
Credex Energy Mines develops durable carbon removal projects across India. We take biomass that would otherwise release its carbon within a season and convert it into a stable form that holds that carbon in soil for centuries. The land gets better. The air gets cleaner. And a measurable quantity of carbon dioxide leaves the atmosphere and stays out of it.
What durable carbon removal means
Not all climate action is the same, and the difference matters.
That distinction is why the market has shifted so sharply. Buyers with serious climate commitments increasingly want removal they can weigh, test and verify, not a projection of what might otherwise have occurred.
Our work sits firmly on the removal side of that line.

Removal
Durable carbon removal takes carbon dioxide that is already in the atmosphere and puts it somewhere it cannot easily return from. It can be weighed, tested and verified.

Where we work
India generates more agricultural residue than almost anywhere on earth, and converts very little of it into anything durable. That gap is our opportunity and our reason for existing.
We focus on residues that are currently wasted. Each of these is biomass that would release its carbon within months or a few years. We give it a longer life.
Crop residues left in the field
Burned after harvest across much of the country, with real consequences for air quality in the surrounding districts.
Processing residues from agro-industry
By-products of milling and manufacturing that end up in short-lived products or low-value uses.
Invasive woody biomass
Species that have spread across dryland areas, displacing native vegetation and grazing land. Removing them helps the land recover.
Why soil
The carbon we produce goes back into agricultural land — often the same fields the biomass came from.
That is not incidental. Carbon stored in soil in this form resists breakdown for hundreds of years, so the climate benefit is real and lasting. But it also improves the soil itself: better water retention, better structure, better conditions for growing.
In a country where a great many farmers are working water-stressed land, that second benefit is not a footnote. It is often the thing that matters most to the person whose field it is.
Built for scrutiny
Carbon removal only means something if it can be verified.
Everything we develop is built to be measured from the outset — the biomass in, the carbon content of what we produce, where it goes and what happens to it. Independent verification is designed into our projects rather than added afterwards.
We would rather do a smaller number of projects that hold up to examination than a large number that do not.
Looking further ahead
Biochar is where we are starting because it works today, in Indian conditions, at a cost that makes sense.
It is not where we intend to finish. As advanced carbon capture and removal technologies mature — direct air capture, enhanced weathering, engineered storage — we intend to develop and fund projects using them here. India will need every credible removal pathway available to it, and most of them are currently absent from the country entirely.
We are open to partnership and investment in that longer arc as well as in the projects we are building now.
Who is behind Credex
Credex was founded by Karan Dangat. His route into carbon removal came through agriculture rather than climate: he built and ran a cold chain warehousing business to address the volume of Indian produce lost after harvest for want of storage, then cut that facility's own footprint with responsible refrigerants and solar generation.
Credex follows the same line of thinking, further upstream — turning residue that is burned after harvest into something worth more than the loss it currently represents.
