How durable carbon removal works

The idea is old and the chemistry is simple. Heat biomass in the absence of oxygen and it does not burn. It chars.

What remains is a stable, carbon-rich solid. The carbon inside it has been rearranged into a form that soil organisms and weathering cannot easily break down. Left in the ground, it stays there for centuries rather than seasons.

From residue to removal

Five steps, each of them measured. The numbers matter because the order does: what goes in determines what comes out, and what comes out is tested before anyone calls it removal.

  1. Biomass that would otherwise be wasted. We source crop residues, agro-processing by-products and invasive woody biomass — material with no durable future, that would release its carbon within months.
  2. Conversion under controlled conditions. The biomass is heated in a sealed, oxygen-starved environment. Temperature and residence time are held within a narrow band, because those conditions determine how stable the resulting carbon is and therefore how long it will remain locked away.
  3. Energy that stays in the process. Gases released during conversion are captured and burned to sustain the process and dry incoming material. A well-designed plant needs almost no external fuel once it is running.
  4. Carbon returned to the land. The finished material goes into agricultural soil, where the carbon remains stored and the soil itself improves.
  5. Measurement at every step. Biomass in, carbon content out, where it went, what happened to it. Verified independently.

What makes it durable

Permanence is not a claim we make. It is a property that can be measured.

The stability of the carbon we produce is determined by its molecular structure, and that structure can be tested in a laboratory. Material that does not meet the threshold does not qualify as durable removal, and we would not represent it as such.

This is the central reason durable removal commands a different level of confidence — and a different price — from avoidance-based credits. It is physical. You can weigh it and test it.
