About carbon removal
An offset usually pays for an emission that was avoided — a forest not cleared, a fuel not burned. The benefit depends on a claim about what would otherwise have happened. Carbon removal takes carbon dioxide that is already in the atmosphere and stores it somewhere it cannot easily escape from. There is no counterfactual, only a physical quantity of carbon in a measurable place. Both have a role, but a company balancing residual emissions on the way to net zero needs removal, not avoidance.
Centuries, for the material we produce. The carbon is held in a condensed, stable structure that soil organisms and weathering cannot readily break down. How long any particular batch will last is not a matter of opinion — it is determined by the molecular structure of the material, which can be measured in a laboratory. Material that fails to meet the stability threshold does not qualify as durable removal.
No. Trees are valuable, but the carbon they hold can return to the atmosphere through fire, felling, disease or drought, and it does so on a timescale of decades. The carbon in the material we produce is chemically stable and stays in soil regardless of what grows above it. Forestry and durable removal are complementary rather than interchangeable.
Crop residue left in a field decomposes within months, releasing its carbon back to the atmosphere. Across much of India it is not left at all but burned, releasing that carbon immediately along with significant air pollution. Conversion captures a portion of that carbon in a form that persists for centuries instead of a season, while the residue is diverted from open burning.
About our work
Residues with no durable future — crop residues left in the field after harvest, by-products from agricultural processing, and invasive woody species growing across dryland areas. We do not use food or feed crops, and we do not source biomass from land converted from natural forest. The material we work with is waste in every practical sense: burned, discarded or converted into products that last a matter of months.
In agricultural soil, frequently in the same districts the biomass came from. That placement is deliberate. The carbon remains stored, and the soil gains water retention and structure — which in water-stressed farming regions is often the benefit that matters most to the farmer whose land it is.
Everything is measured rather than estimated. Biomass entering the process is weighed and characterised. The material produced is weighed and analysed in a laboratory for carbon content and stability. Where it goes and what happens to it is recorded. Independent verification is designed into our projects from the outset rather than added afterwards, because a removal claim that cannot be checked is worth very little.
No. We work with residues, not crops. Nothing we use displaces food or feed production, and no land is converted for our purposes. Where we harvest invasive woody species from dryland areas, the effect is generally the reverse — grazing land and native vegetation recover ground that had been lost.
They are paid for material that currently costs them money to deal with, and in many cases receive the finished product back for their own soil. Collection and processing also create work in the districts where the biomass originates. A project that delivers climate benefit but nothing to the people farming the land has, in our view, been designed badly.
Working with us
Early, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Credex Energy Mines is an Indian company developing its first durable carbon removal projects. We are not yet an operator. We think a company that is honest about its stage is easier to work with than one that is not.
Probably, if the volume is meaningful and the material currently goes to burning, disposal or a low-value use. Not every residue stream is suitable — moisture, ash content and how the material is currently used all matter — but the only way to know is to look. We are glad to have that conversation.
We are open to conversations with investors, funds and development finance institutions interested in durable carbon removal in India. Our present work is biomass-based removal, which is deployable today. We also intend to develop and fund projects using advanced carbon capture technologies as they become viable in Indian conditions — a pathway almost entirely absent from India despite the scale of need here.
Our first projects are in development, so we are not yet delivering. If you are building a removal portfolio and want exposure to Indian supply, it is worth talking now rather than later — durable removal projects are typically contracted well before they begin producing.
